Canadian Women front and centre at TIFF

07 • 09

We’re proud that Canada is at the forefront of the global movement to ensure gender parity in the industry. For example, many of Canada’s initiatives at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival spotlight our female filmmakers, such as the Birks Diamond Tribute to the Year’s Women in Film (in partnership with Telefilm Canada). There will also be a special Focus on Talent Panel featuring five Canadian female producers, and the anticipated Eurimages Audentia award, which will be presented to one winning female director at TIFF!

The sixth annual Birks Diamond Tribute to the Year’s Women in Film presents six honourees in four categories: director, actor, screenwriter and (new this year) emerging talent, all picked by a jury of 23 Canadian journalists and bloggers, in this can’t-miss celebration of Canada’s diverse female storytellers. The 2018 recipients include:

  • Director Nettie Wild
  • Actor Tantoo Cardinal
  • Actor Pascale Bussières
  • Screenwriter Susan Coyne
  • Emerging director Stella Meghie
  • Emerging director Jeanne Leblanc

Yet another exciting award will be presented to top female directors at this year’s TIFF, this time, the Audentia Award, by Eurimages (the cultural support fund of the Council of Europe). As explained on the Eurimages website, the Audentia Award is a cash prize of 30,000 Euros, and, the website continues, its purpose is promoting gender equality in the industry by celebrating female directors–who certainly have plenty of “courage and bravery,” which is the literal meaning behind the award’s Latin name. Canada is Eurimages’ 38th member country, and three outstanding Canadians are among the 13 Audentia Award nominees. The winner will be announced during TIFF. (Stay tuned for details!).

Last but not least, don’t miss the RDV Canada panel for a special rendezvous with five producers, both emerging and established, who will give us the scoop on their different paths to success, what they’ve learned, and offer some wise advice and insights to industry newbies! We’re excited about these TIFF opportunities for Canadian women in film to shine! Please join us in celebrating their achievements.
