With MIPCOM going fully digital this year, Canada’s got an awesome presence planned for this major online content marketplace.

Here’s your breakdown:

  • From October 5 through November 17, 2020, MIPCOM Online+ is happening and promises a month of events, screenings, conferences, showcases, pitch sessions, and more (with MIPJunior included in the action).

  • From October 12 to 16, it’s digital MIPCOM week, where we’ve got two Canadian series up for prizes at the MIPCOM Diversify TV Excellence Awards!

  • In parallel, the third edition of the CANNESERIES television festival, will run online with some events held in person, from October 9 to 14, 2020

But first… networking! Discover our online Canada Pavilion with all our international business partners and friends. With more than 50 Canadian companies already registered to participate, your virtual Canada Pavilion is sure to be one of the most productive destinations in MIPCOM cyberspace.

MIPCOM Diversify TV Excellence Awards

Telefilm Canada will be the co-presenting partner of the 4th edition of the MIPCOM Diversify TV Excellence Awards (with the Canada Media Fund) and Canadian actor Jean Yoon (CBC’s Kim’s Convenience) will be presenting an award! Livestream the event on your couch on October 13, 2020, via the MIPCOM Online+ platform (the event will also be held physically).

Two nominated Canadian projects in the competition:

1. Non-Scripted category: Employable Me

Now in its third season, this doc series showcases job seekers with disabilities. Produced by Thomas Howe Associates Inc.

2.  Kids Programming category: Lockdown

This series is about a group of friends trying to stay connected during pandemic lockdown. Produced by Sinking Ship Entertainment, it was filmed with smartphones and webcams.

Fun fact: Canadian Shabnam Rezaei, President and Co-Founder of Big Bad Boo Studios will be on this year’s jury! (Last year, the production company took home the MIPCOM Diversify TV Excellence award in the Kids Programming category with animated show The Bravest Knight).

Finally, at CANNESERIES, three Canadian projects are in the running for Best Short Form Series:

  • Eva Kabuya’s Dog Days (Amours d’occasion). In this eight-episode series, a heatwave wreaks havoc in the Montreal district of Saint-Henri. Produced by: St Laurent  (Every year since this fest’s 2018 inaugural edition, when its series Dominos took home the big prize, St Laurent TV  has had a project in the running!)
  • Charles Grenier’s Claire and the Elderly (Claire et les vieux). Set in a senior’s residence, a young girl bonds with her grandmother and the other residents in this six-episode series. Produced by: UGO Media.
  • Renuka Jeyapalan (credits include the hit series Kim’s Convenience), Jessie Gabe, and Joyce Wong’s First Person. This series is adapted from personal essays in The Globe & Mail. Produced by: Carousel Pictures.

The awards will be announced at the fest’s closing ceremonies on October 14!

Out of Competition

  • Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein’s Shadowplay. In this eight-episode series, an American police officer arrives in Berlin in the summer of 1946 to create a police force in the aftermath of the war. Produced by: Tandem Productions / Bron Studios in coproduction with ZDF.
