Shooting in the hills of central France, Dostie (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mutants<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Je finirai en prison) <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">successfully manages to trace a straight slither between an abbey of practicing monks down to a fitness gym in the centre of the local town; in doing so, he juxtaposes two different fraternities of religious attendance and daily ritual against one another. After an act of God tears the roof of the abbey asunder, what comes next is assuredly reptilian, conjuring scenes that creep in, take hold, and won\u2019t let go. I knew immediately upon viewing that I had to learn more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-98605 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/rdvcanada.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alexandre-dostie-boa-456x576.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"456\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rdvcanada.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alexandre-dostie-boa-456x576.png 456w, https:\/\/rdvcanada.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alexandre-dostie-boa-342x432.png 342w, https:\/\/rdvcanada.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alexandre-dostie-boa-768x969.png 768w, https:\/\/rdvcanada.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alexandre-dostie-boa-1217x1536.png 1217w, https:\/\/rdvcanada.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alexandre-dostie-boa.png 1350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI had a recurring dream for a while where this huge muscular man was crushing someone in his arms,\u201d Dostie shares, who developed the story for this expansive piece at a screenwriting residency organized through the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA very strange dream \u2026 the man was lying in bed and I could only see his bare back, the feet of someone stuck between his legs, trying to escape. This image somehow got burned into my imagination. Ten years later, we\u2019re in the middle of the pandemic, and I\u2019m training in my apartment like a mad man trying not to go completely insane. And at that moment, I really felt like some crazy monk, living a life of silence and solitude and somehow not being at peace with it. This tension between spiritual and physical became very real to me. That\u2019s when my strange dream came back in my mind\u2026 and it all clicked.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dostie\u2019s \u201ccrazy monk,\u201d at least in this film, is a young brother named L\u00e9onide, played with an all-in physical performance by actor Dimitri Dor\u00e9. \u201cThe monastery you see in the film is a patchwork of four different locations: the old <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myhauteloire.fr\/en\/cultural-heritage.\/monuments-to-visit\/abbey-and-romanesque-cloister-of-lavaudieu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abbey of Lavaudieu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being the centerpiece,\u201d Dostie says, adding that director of photography Vincent Biron shot each historic location using an ALEXA 35 with 20mm and 40mm Zeiss Ultra Prime lenses \u2014 and a 24-290mm Ang\u00e9nieux long lens zoom to boot. \u201cI also spent some time casting in Clermont-Ferrand and Paris, and that\u2019s when I met Dimitri Dor\u00e9. His take on the character was so interesting,\u201d Dostie says. \u201cI loved that his acting background was a mix of cinema, theater, and circus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the notes for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rdvcanada.ca\/en\/events\/not-short-on-talent-at-cannes-2025\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this year\u2019s Not Short on Talent selection,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I mentioned some thoughts I\u2019ve been having lately with respect to the future of filmmaking: as text and image generators become ubiquitous, how will we continue to justify straying from the path of least resistance?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen they tell you it\u2019s all about the process? Well, that\u2019s exactly what you trade off with computer-generated work,\u201d Dostie says. \u201cThe process is about climbing the mountain to get your shot. The process is about shooting a scene in a tiny crypt with an angry snake. The process is about getting down in the dirt \u2014 naked as you came \u2014 and crawling like a beast. Of course, sometimes you need a little digital hand (if you want a hole in the roof of your cathedral, for example), but otherwise the fun resides in taking the risk of doing the thing for real.
