With nine producing, eight directing and more credentials that continue to grow, she has been deeply involved in filmmaking and pitching stories for years.<\/h3>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-16fcb18 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"16fcb18\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-573d843\" data-id=\"573d843\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9634a1f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9634a1f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; color: #292b2c;\">Being in the industry, she started to notice a pattern and decided to do something about it. <b>\u201cI began to design this study as I observed the lack of representation of BIPOC women at industry events throughout Alberta,<\/b>\u201d said Knight in an email interview.<\/p><p>In 2021, she started doing interviews with BIPOC women with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts to create\u00a0<em>Building Inclusive Networks in the Film &amp; Television Industry,<\/em>\u00a0a first of its kind research endeavor that looks into networking in the film and television industry in Canada to see where underrepresented groups are feeling barriers.<\/p><p>With background as a researcher and a BA in psychology,\u00a0<b>Knight took the role of the study\u2019s designer, lead researcher, data analyst and report writer alongside a team of BIPOC women as research assistants to help her in her search for inclusivity.<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-d366fdf elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"d366fdf\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-5e745e5\" data-id=\"5e745e5\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-605e267 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"605e267\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><p><b>Key Discoveries<\/b><span style=\"font-family: inherit;font-size: 1.875rem;letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-fad9e57 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"fad9e57\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-a0968c5\" data-id=\"a0968c5\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-28d1dc5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"28d1dc5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Networking events are arguable one of the most important ways to move up in an industry, especially the film industry. According to general labour market research by Julia Freeland Fisher, director of education research at the Clayton Christensen Institute, 70% of all jobs are not published publicly on job sites and 80% of jobs are filled through personal and professional connections. So, when looking for support on a film endeavor, a production company to work with or a new project to get onto in the film industry, networking is your way in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lack of opportunities for vertical or horizontal networking, especially in geographical centres having a smaller screen industry, restrict options for employment as well as prospects for creators to advance their own projects,\u201d said Knight. \u201cOn the other side of the coin, when BIPOC women are missing from these gatherings, their absence perpetuates practices of hiring from the \u2018inner circle\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The discoveries Knight made in her research was there are two key issues: either the networking opportunities are uncomfortable to BIPOC women, or they\u2019re not invited at all.<\/p>\n<p>Microaggressions, feeling unwelcomes or being tired that going to the events \u201cdon\u2019t lead to anything\u201d, as some participants said in the research are what lead to underrepresented communities facing an inherent barrier caused by behaviour in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of our participants shared that they or their friends stopped attending industry networking events all together due to their past experiences,\u201d said Knight.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, some participants said that getting an invite in itself is a struggle, which leads to an even more obvious barrier for this community.<\/p>\n<p>One phenomenon described by participants was the experience of racialized and Indigenous women being tired of coming to events that \u201cdon\u2019t lead to anything\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a21cd7e elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a21cd7e\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-ed7ec57\" data-id=\"ed7ec57\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c3aa9dd elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c3aa9dd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><p><b>How the Industry Needs to Change<\/b><span style=\"font-family: inherit;font-size: 1.875rem;letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-d9c8cca elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"d9c8cca\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-0e49fec\" data-id=\"0e49fec\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2f92727 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2f92727\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Though these issues are deep-rooted, there are steps organisation can take into making networking events more inclusive moving forward.<\/p><p>\u201cMost exasperating to our participants was that this front-facing work of inclusivity is being done \u2018without being backed up by the work needed to ensure that the organization is actually inclusive\u2019,\u201d said Knight.<\/p><p>That is why at the end of the <em>Building Inclusive Networks in the Film &amp; Television Industry<\/em> report, Knight and her team lay out clear steps for people to follow to create more inclusivity including a pre-production, production, post-production and distribution check-list for events.<\/p><p>\u201cTrue diversity and inclusion have to come from the philosophy and makeup of the organization,\u201d said Knight.
