After debuting at the Canadian Film Fest in March, premium drama series Streams Flow From A River<\/em><\/a> screens at Canneseries in the fest\u2019s Short Form Competition! To highlight its exciting international premiere, we\u2019ve spoken to queer South Asian Canadian producer Shant Joshi, president of Fae Pictures. Big news: Joshi has also been named one of this year\u2019s Producers to Watch at MIPTV, the industry market taking place at the same time as Canneseries.<\/strong><\/p>

Back home in Canada, the six-episode series is available on Canada\u2019s Super Channel. Created and directed by Christopher Yip, Streams Flow from A River<\/em> chronicles generations of an Asian-Canadian immigrant family. \u201cIt goes back to the day the father came to Canada, at the airport, trying to find a job, all the way to the lineage of his son, living in the city struggling to make ends meet, mirroring the struggles of his father,\u201d says 27-year old Joshi. \u201cThe two have hit an impasse and don\u2019t see eye to eye. But we realize their stories are quite similar.\u201d<\/p>

Hence the title.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

We all come from the same river but we\u2019ve segmented into our own streams, and we need to come together to enter a rhythm and momentum that propels us forward.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Diverse stories for a \u201cdiverse millennial audience\u201d<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The show reflects Fae Pictures\u2019 mission \u201cof decolonizing Hollywood and elevating underrepresented stories,\u201d <\/b>explains Joshi, who is part of the Future of Film Showcase\u2019s Advisory Board and the Canadian Media Producers Association\u2019s restructuring, equity, diversity, and inclusion action committee (REDIAC), while serving as co-chair of the BIPOC TV & Film Board. \u201cWe\u2019re producing content we want to see on screen, knowing there\u2019s an audience for it. If my team and I want to watch it, there must be other people [who do too] … Maybe that\u2019s a fool\u2019s errand, but we were all in early stages in our careers and had the opportunity to go for it and felt [there was a need for] a diverse millennial company trying to hit the diverse millennial audience.\u201d<\/p>

Their approach shines behind the scenes as well as on screen. For instance, Variety\u2019s <\/em><\/a>Naman Ramachandran<\/a>\u00a0reports that 75% of Streams Flow From A River\u2019<\/i>s crew is of East Asian descent and its \u201call-Asian writer\u2019s room\u201d is a first for a Canadian series.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Driven by their mission of \u201ccreating cinematic content for, by, and about queer, trans, and BIPOC people,\u201d Joshi and colleagues built Fae Pictures during the pandemic, and now have offices in Toronto, Los Angeles, and New York. Upcoming projects include the “South Asian horror\u201d In Flames (selected for Directors\u2019 Fortnight at this year\u2019s Cannes Film Festival) <\/i>and \u201crevolutionary drag queen movie\u201d Queen Tut<\/em><\/b>, both supported by Telefilm Canada, among other funders, while highlights of their previous work include International Dawn Chorus Day<\/b>,<\/em> which earned a Teddy Award at the Berlinale (director John Greyson).<\/p>

And of course, <\/b>Framing Agnes<\/b>,<\/em> the acclaimed documentary about a trans woman\u2019s legacy that their company made with filmmaker Chase Joynt. When the project premiered (virtually) at Sundance in 2022, Joshi and team jumped on social media. With 5000 virtual seats up for grabs, \u201cwe said, \u2018let\u2019s get trans Twitter out to support it,\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cDuring the premiere, we were getting tweets of people quoting the film in real-time and responding to it. I said, \u2018this is what it\u2019s about, this one person watching this film on their laptop or TV and saying, \u2018this is my experience, I haven\u2019t had a chance to hear myself validated on screen before.\u2019\u201d (At Sundance, Framing Agnes<\/em>, also funded by Telefilm among others, scooped up the NEXT Audience Award and Innovator Award for Joynt).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The road to producing professionally<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Born and raised in Toronto watching Bollywood and Disney, Joshi\u2019s eyes were always \u201cglued to the screen,\u201d he says. \u201cI loved entering these fantastical worlds.\u201d During film school at York University, he became the go-to producer, helming more than 15 student films. Realizing he liked it \u2013 and was good at it \u2013 from problem-solving to scheduling, budgets to personal relationships, he began working professionally. The question became: how to produce with purpose?<\/b><\/p>

\u201cMy parents are both immigrants who succeeded and excelled in their career paths,\u201d says Joshi. \u201cSo if I\u2019m comfortable from a socioeconomic standpoint, what can I do to improve the lives of others? I see the power of filmmaking and storytelling as a privilege I don\u2019t take lightly… If I just do anything that comes my way, what am I going to be doing?\u201d<\/p>
