Marie-Jos\u00e9e Saint-Pierre\u2019s <\/span>La Th\u00e9orie Lauzon <\/span><\/i>(<\/span>The Lauzon Theory<\/span><\/i>)<\/span><\/a> is an intriguing documentary short: at once a study of Jean-Claude Lauzon \u2014 framed here as Quebec cinema\u2019s <\/span>\u201cmouton noir\u201d \u2014 <\/span><\/i>and his all-too-brief career, it\u2019s also, as the title suggests, a hypothetical deep-dive into the relationship the director shared with his father.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Or, perhaps, the one he didn\u2019t.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201c[Jean-Claude Lauzon] was quite ashamed of his father,\u201d Saint-Pierre says, mentioning she was encouraged to study Lauzon after speaking with Claude Fournier, another lion of Quebecois cinema, at a film festival party in 2014. \u201c[Lauzon\u2019s] father was behaving badly. He wouldn’t work. He would go to bars and get into fights. His father had a lot of stays in mental institutions, and Jean-Claude himself was terrified of having mental illnesses \u2026 he said he would never have kids because of that.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Lauzon is a perfect subject for Saint-Pierre, an animation professor at Laval University, as she\u2019s both a master of animated realism and films about filmmakers (her film on Norman McLaren, <\/span><\/span>McLaren\u2019s Negatives, <\/span><\/span>won the Prix Iris for Best Animated Film in 2007). \u201c<\/span><\/span>I’m a professor, so I spend a lot of time doing that,\u201d she says. \u201cI quite love it because I feel like I can give to the new generation of animators.\u201d <\/span><\/span>Here, <\/span>with <\/span><\/span>La <\/span>Th\u00e9orie<\/span> Lauzon, <\/span><\/span>she melds two actors from Lauzon\u2019s filmography \u2014 Roger Lebel as the father in <\/span><\/span>Un Zoo la <\/span>nuit<\/span> (<\/span><\/span>Night Zoo, 1987), and narration voiced by <\/span>Gilbert Sicotte<\/span>, <\/span>who also narrated <\/span><\/span>L\u00e9olo<\/span> <\/span>(1992) \u2014 to tell a story about, ultimately, a pensive father looking for his lost son.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

It\u2019s really a mix of different elements \u2014 finding the balance of all these things can be quite challenging.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

That\u2019s a tall order \u2014 and a lot of rotoscoping \u2014 but Saint-Pierre delivers with impressive creativity and, more crucially, with thoughtful imagination. \u201c<\/span>I don’t make portraits the way I used to,\u201d says Saint-Pierre, who laments there isn\u2019t a lot of footage of Lauzon. \u201cNow I realize you can never really know someone [just] through archives. It’s a more experimental approach to documentary filmmaking, but nonetheless, I’m quite happy to be able to take the father from <\/span>Night Zoo<\/span><\/i> and have him interact with the archives of Lauzon.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Of what she\u2019s compiled, the archives are indeed fascinating. In addition to scenes of Lauzon\u2019s work, Saint-Pierre unearths HD clips of the filmmaker speaking frankly about the industry, and his opinions about Canadian film financing remain relevant (\u201cJean-Claude Lauzon made a living with advertising, not with filmmaking,\u201d says Saint-Pierre). This footage would be compelling on its own, but with Saint-Pierre\u2019s original hand-drawn animations overtop them, they come to life and feel mythical. \u201cIt takes a lot of time to put all the techniques together and make them fit, because it can look like a big poutine,\u201d Saint-Pierre jokes. \u201cIt\u2019s really a mix of different elements \u2014 finding the balance of all these things can be quite challenging.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Saint-Pierre\u2019s short<\/span><\/span> screens this month as part of the Short Film Corner at the Cannes Film Festival, an event that catapulted Lauzon\u2019s career onto the international stage after opening the Directors\u2019 Fortnight in 1987 (<\/span><\/span>Un Zoo la <\/span>nuit<\/span><\/span>)<\/span><\/span> and vying for the Palme d\u2019Or in 1992 (<\/span><\/span>L\u00e9olo<\/span><\/span>).<\/span><\/span> We see scenes of Lauzon on the red carpet, making <\/span><\/span>La <\/span>Th\u00e9orie<\/span> Lauzon <\/span><\/span><\/em>feel all the more meta \u2014 or \u201c<\/span><\/span>boucler<\/span> la boucle<\/span><\/span>,\u201d as Saint-Pierre says, suggesting it\u2019s all come full circle. \u201cI made this film 30 years [after <\/span><\/span>L\u00e9olo<\/span><\/span> premiered],\u201d she adds. \u201cThe point is for people to go out and watch his films again.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

La <\/span>Th\u00e9orie<\/span> Lauzon is one of seven shorts selected for <\/span><\/span>\u201cGenerations,\u201d the latest iteration of Telefilm Canada\u2019s Not Short on Talent programme.<\/span><\/span><\/a> Outside of teaching, Saint-Pierre is also in development on a feature film that retraces the history of feminist creators in Quebec.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
