French-language content took the global spotlight at the Rencontres de coproduction francophone (RCF)<\/a>, where four of the 22 selected projects were Canadian! The 17th edition of this important annual event took place in Brussels from November 10 through 12, 2021.<\/h3>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The RCF\u2019s goal<\/a>? It\u2019s all about boosting French-language production and cultivating international partnerships that encourage financing, development, and coproduction opps for French-language film or television projects!<\/p>

It\u2019s no secret that Canada loves coproduction<\/a>. Two Canadian cultural institutions – the SODEC<\/a> and Telefilm Canada<\/a> – were part of a group of six international Francophone cultural institutes that organized the event.<\/strong> Our Canadian producers (all from Quebec) and their in-development projects were front and centre among 286 accredited participants<\/strong>, hailing from France, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Belgium, Lebanon (this year\u2019s Country of Honour), and Burkina Faso. The RCF event facilitated 100 meetings which included a panel with the funds present, and 300 meetings between project leaders.<\/p>

As our producers explain below, the RCF offered a great opportunity for some of Canada\u2019s French-language producers to network, pitch their projects, and pave the way for deals with global financiers, distributors, and other industry professionals.<\/strong> These connections facilitate international coproduction and enable future success.<\/p>

With 500 shorts under her belt,<\/strong> as well as features, producer Ginette Petit\u2019s credits include 2019\u2019s And the Birds Rained Down (Il pleuvait des oiseaux)<\/em>, which was a theatrical hit that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival; screened at the San Sebastian and Vancouver fests, among many others others. Awards include a Canadian Screen Award, and three Iris Awards (and 13 nominations) at the Gala Qu\u00e9bec Cin\u00e9ma.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

About the project: <\/strong>In Space Cadet<\/em><\/a>, the titular character embarks on a scientific mission, leaving behind the lonely and devoted Robot who raised her, contemplating her choices and legacy as time passes. This animated musical feature is based on the soundtrack and graphic novel by musician, turntablist, and renowned artist Kid Koala (otherwise known as Eric San). (P.S. \n\t\t\t\t\u201cTo me, the RCF confirmed the great similarity between Quebec and French-speaking Belgium, both culturally and socially. We are under similar linguistic pressure, and need to distinguish ourselves by stepping out of the shadow of the great production powers that surround us. This brings us closer together in our choice of story subjects, and in the way we treat these stories. Marie-Claude Beauchamp specializes in animated children\u2019s television series and films<\/strong>, such as her studio\u2019s 3D stereoscopic hits Snowtime<\/em> (2015) and sequel Racetime<\/em> (2018). <\/em>Both movies were sold in 200 countries, featured at international festivals, and won many awards<\/strong>, including a Canadian Screen Award honour for Snowtime’s<\/em> theatrical success as top Canadian box office earner in the country that year. (Snowtime<\/em>\u2019s U.S. premiere was at the Sundance Film Festival!)<\/p>

About the project: <\/strong>In Les Bottan\u00efx,<\/em> a family reconnects over multiple generations when two young girls visit their great-grandmother for her 100th birthday, but she has been robbed! Hany Ouichou\u2019s 2016 collaboration with director Mathieu Denis, Those Who Make Revolution Halfway Only Dig Their Own Graves (Ceux qui font les r\u00e9volutions \u00e0 moiti\u00e9 n\u2019ont fait que se creuser un tombeau)<\/em>, took home Best Canadian Film at TIFF; was nominated for three Canadian Screen Awards; screened at the Berlinale, among other international fests, and earned rave reviews from international press like the <\/a>Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a>.<\/strong> At TIFF, he also snagged the CMPA\u2019s Emerging Producer Award! More recently, he was selected by Europe\u2019s ACE producers network<\/a> to take part in their ACE 31 training programme<\/strong>, to join the prestigious network.<\/p>

About the project: <\/strong>Buy Your Way to Heaven (Gagne ton ciel),<\/em> is a satirical thriller about a seemingly-happy family man, who behind his good career and enviable life, is secretly miserable and crippled with debt. Genevi\u00e8ve Gosselin-G\u2019s production credits with L\u2019Unit\u00e9 Centrale include Philippe Lesage\u2019s 2018 feature Genesis (Gen\u00e8se),<\/em> which won best film, director, and actor at Spain\u2019s Valladolid International Film Festival; best film at Mexico\u2019s Los Cabos International Film Festival, and best film at Montreal\u2019s Festival du nouveau cin\u00e9ma<\/em>!<\/strong> L\u2019Unit\u00e9 Centrale is also behind F\u00e9lix Dufour-Laperri\u00e8re\u2019s animated feature Ville Neuve <\/em>(2018), which premiered at Venice Days and competed at the Annecy International Film Festival, and Claude Cloutier\u2019s award-winning animated short Bad Seeds (Mauvaises herbes<\/em><\/a>)<\/a> (with the National Film Board of Canada), to name a few.<\/p>

About the project: <\/strong>From city to country, two parallel stories unfold, where lives are changed by new encounters.
