Jennifer Holness\u2019s Subjects of Desire<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>

Making its Canadian premiere is this insightful documentary which \u201cexamines the cultural shift in North American beauty standards towards embracing (or as some feel \u2013 appropriating) Black aesthetics and features<\/a>.\u201d Fresh off its SXSW 2021 debut (and with rave reviews by U.S. press like Variety<\/em><\/a>) Subjects of Desire<\/em> is set against the 50th Miss Black America pageant. Earlier this year, the Toronto-based filmmaker behind the doc won the Established Producer Award at the Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA)\u2019s Indiescreen Awards. In its North American premiere, this Canada-France coproduction (produced by Intuitive Pictures and Les Films du Point du Jour) explores changes in the way we work and the lives and (sometimes harsh) realities faced by those who toil in the digital platform-driven gig economy (which, for example, refers to gigs such as food delivery, driving, etc…). As a member of the Kainai First Nation (Blood Tribe, Blackfoot Confederacy) and S\u00e1mi from Norway, the filmmaker brings an empathetic, first-hand perspective to the opioid crisis and overdose epidemic within Alberta\u2019s Kainai First Nation.<\/p>
