Following its success at the 44th Toronto International Film Festival,<\/a><\/u> where Sophie Deraspe\u2019s Antigone<\/a><\/u> <\/em>had its world premiere and snagged the coveted Best Canadian Feature Film prize, Deraspe\u2019s fifth feature is making waves. \u00a0As Telefilm recently announced<\/a><\/u>, Antigone <\/em>has been chosen as Canada\u2019s official contender for the Best International Feature Film category of the 92nd Academy Awards, which take place February 9, 2020<\/b>!<\/p>

The drama revisits the Greek tragedy Antigone <\/em>(by Sophocles) with a modern plot, and themes the director feels it\u2019s important to highlight in this work, she explained in Telefilm\u2019s press release. \u201cBringing Antigone <\/em>to the Oscar race is not only a huge honour, it\u2019s also a way for me to highlight the values of empathy, artistry and integrity, which Canadian films exemplify so well,<\/b>\u201d said Deraspe, who also wrote the script and first found cinema through her passion for visual arts and literature. Hailing from the province of Quebec, the filmmaker\u2019s many accolades include the FIPRESCI International Critics\u2019 Prize at Turin for Les Loups (The Wolves)<\/em>, while her documentary Le profil Amina (The Amina Profile) <\/em>competed at Sundance.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Antigone<\/em>\u2019s story goes like this: When she helps her brother flee prison, a teenaged Antigone (played by Nah\u00e9ma Ricci, who was recently chosen for the TIFF Rising Stars<\/a><\/u> programme) chooses to listen to her own moral law and inner sense of justice and love and over societal law and external power. The selection process<\/strong><\/h3>

So how did Antigone<\/em> become Canada\u2019s pick for the Oscars this year? Well, Telefilm Canada coordinates and chairs the pan-Canadian Selection Committee<\/b> (without voting right). The committee consists of about 20 members representing key government agencies and national film industry associations.<\/p>

This year, 16 films were submitted to the committee, nine of which were directed or co-directed by women, proudly noted Christa Dickenson, Executive Director of Telefilm Canada.<\/p>

Canadian history at the Oscars<\/strong><\/h3>

And by the way, while the term Best International Feature Film might sound unfamiliar, it\u2019s actually the new name of the category that used to be known as Best Foreign Language Film, for which Canada\u2019s submission has been one of the Oscar race\u2019s final nominees eight times so far! Our contender even took home the gold in 2004; Denys Arcand\u2019s The Barbarian Invasions (Les Invasions barbares<\/em>). Fun fact: two other Arcand films were also official Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nominees: The Decline of the American Empire (Le D\u00e9clin de l\u2019empire am\u00e9ricain)\u00a0 <\/em>and Jesus of Montreal (J\u00e9sus de Montr\u00e9al).\u00a0<\/em><\/p>

Other nominations around the world<\/strong><\/h3>

Other nominations submitted from countries all around the world include, Elia Suleiman\u2019s France-Qatar-Germany-Canada-Palestine-Turkey coproduction It Must Be Heaven<\/em> (submitted by Palestine)<\/b>, and Sebasti\u00e1n Barriuso and Rodrigo Barriuso\u2019s Cuban-Canadian co-venture Un Traductor (A Translator)<\/a><\/u><\/em> (submitted by Cuba).<\/b>\u00a0 The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will share a shortlist of 10 films on December 16, 2019.
