The Montreal filmmaker also acts in the movie, about a friendship made complicated after an onscreen kiss. Dolan is no stranger to Cannes, since his 2009 debut, <em>J&#8217;ai tu\u00e9 ma m\u00e8re (I Killed My Mother)<\/em> won three Directors\u2019 Fortnight awards. Not only did he sit on the Cannes jury in 2015, his feature <em>It\u2019s Only the End of the World (Juste la fin du monde<\/em>), won the Cannes Grand Prix in 2016, while <em>Mommy <\/em>won the Jury Prize in 2014. His other Cannes screenings include 2010\u2019s<em> Les amours imaginaires (Heartbeats)<\/em> and 2012\u2019s <em>Laurence Anyways <\/em>\u2014 both were contenders in the Un Certain Regard section.<\/p><p>And guess what? Those latter two films featured Quebec actress <strong>Monia Chokri<\/strong>, who will be competing at Cannes this year with a feature she wrote and directed! Chokri\u2019s directorial debut,<strong><em> La Femme de mon fr\u00e8re<\/em> <em>(A Brother\u2019s Love)<\/em><\/strong> is in Un Certain Regard, and is about a penniless young doctoral student who moves in with her brother. Their strong relationship is put to the test when he falls in love with a new flame.<\/p><p>Also in the running for the Palme d\u2019Or is Quebec producer <strong>Serge No\u00ebl\u2019s new project, <em>It Must be Heaven (C\u2019est \u00e7a le paradis?)<\/em><\/strong> This France-Canada-Turkey-Germany coproduction is directed by Elia Suleiman, the acclaimed Palestinian director who won the Cannes 2002 Jury Prize for <em>Divine Intervention.<\/em> Serge No\u00ebl is also returning to Cannes; in 2015, <em>Fatima<\/em>, the France-Canada coprod on which he was a producer, was in its Directors\u2019 Fortnight.<\/p><p>Moving along to the 51st annual <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.quinzaine-realisateurs.com\">Directors\u2019 Fortnight<\/a><\/u> (the independent section organized by the French Directors\u2019 Guild taking place May 15 to 25, 2019) is <strong><em>To Live To Sing<\/em>; Canadian director Johnny Ma\u2019s<\/strong> second feature film also has Canadian producers Matt Drake and Amanda Verhagen attached to it. This China-France-Canada coproduction comes after Ma\u2019s debut feature <em>Old Stone<\/em> that premiered in Berlin\u2019s Forum in 2016.<\/p><p>Also in Directors\u2019 Fortnight is Robert Eggers\u2019 <strong><em>The Lighthouse<\/em><\/strong>. While not \u2018officially Canadian,\u2019 let\u2019s give a special shout out to this film that was shot in Nova Scotia and stars Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson.<\/p><p>Last but not least, at the 58th annual <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.semainedelacritique.com\">Semaine de la critique<\/a><\/u>, which happens May 15 to 23, 2019, Canada\u2019s got a special screening of a sci-fi short (not in competition).
