When Genev<\/span>i\u00e8ve\u00a0<\/span>Dulude-De\u00a0Celles\u2019 second narrative feature\u00a0<\/span>Nina Roza<\/i><\/strong>\u00a0debuts at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival<\/a>, where this Canada-Italy-Bulgaria-Belgium coproduction is in official competition, the Montreal-based filmmaker will be there with many members of her cast and crew! Hailing from all these countries, they will get together for the very first time at this world premiere \u2013 a cinematic family reunion of sorts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cThat is really moving for me,\u201d says Dulude-De\u00a0Celles, who wrote and directed this drama about Mihail, a Bulgarian immigrant and curator who must return there for work to investigate the art of a prodigal child painter.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201cAll these creative talents worked together to create the film, and I\u2019m really touched that we will get together to premiere it.\u201d She\u2019s also excited to share the experience with a live audience. \u201cI\u2019m grateful to have a premiere in a big theatre. I appreciate the exchange with the public at film festivals, it\u2019s interesting to get feedback when they see the film.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span>While Dulude-De\u00a0Celles\u2019 debut feature,\u00a0<\/span>A Colony (Une\u00a0colonie)<\/span><\/i> \u2013 which in 2019, took home top honours at the Berlinale in the fest\u2019s Generation Kplus section for young audiences \u2013 was based on her own life experience \u201cgrowing up in the countryside near a First Nations community,\u201d this second feature is an amalgam of several stories. Among them, the idea of what would happen if an immigrant who never returned to their country of origin had to go back, and a viral video Dulude-De Celles happened to see. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cI came across a viral video of a child painter, I was stunned by her maturity, so I read about child painters and got interested in the process of buying those artworks, there\u2019s a trust issue. You don\u2019t know if a parent or adult is behind it, which became the quest of our main character Mihail.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The Making of Nina Roza <\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Initially, she explains, the story was set in Romania \u2013 where she\u00a0actually spent\u00a0time in her twenties. When those plans fell through, one of her Belgian producers said, \u201cCould it take place in Bulgaria?\u201d\u00a0Indeed\u00a0it could. \u201cWe changed the script to make it happen in Bulgaria and then everything flowed,\u201d she says. The film was shot there, and in Montreal.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The story behind making the film \u2013 from securing international partners and financing to generating critical acclaim (even before its anticipated premiere) \u2013 reflects the quality of its storytelling, its producers\u2019 creativity, and the value of attending international markets, notably, thanks to Telefilm Canada\u2019s support.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, the Italian co-producers joined the project when Dulude-De\u00a0Celles\u00a0and her team attended the Venice Gap-Financing Market<\/a>. Part of the Venice International Film Festival, this platform helps international producers secure financing for their projects. Which is precisely what they did!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat market really helped us,\u201d she says.\u201d If it\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0for that market, we\u00a0wouldn\u2019t\u00a0be working with the Italian producers. We met them, they read the script and were super interested in the project, so we said, \u2018OK let\u2019s try it!\u2019\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To\u00a0optimize\u00a0collaboration with these new partners, Dulude-De\u00a0Celles\u00a0adjusted the script again to make the gallerist role of Italian origin and be able to offer\u00a0a great role\u00a0to an Italian\u00a0actress. In addition, she says, \u201cWe had an Italian costume designer, sound recordist, and we did the end of post-production,\u00a0colour\u00a0correction and the mix there.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And, in its final post-production stages, the Locarno Film Festival\u2019s Locarno Pro<\/a> event last summer, the unfinished film won two big prizes: The Urban Post First Look Award and the Jannuzzi Smith\u202fAward\/ Canada was the country of Focus at the Locarno Film Festival\u2019s First Look, and\u00a0<\/span>Nina Roza<\/i><\/strong>\u00a0was among the six projects selected and presented there. Dulude-De\u00a0Celles\u00a0is thankful for the opportunity to\u00a0have participated.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Dulude-De Celles is no stranger to the international awards circuit! Among her many major awards over the years for her various projects, highlights include a 2019 Canadian Screen Award for Best First Feature Film for <\/span>A Colony\u00a0<\/i>(Une\u00a0colonie<\/i><\/strong>)<\/strong>, and a 2015 Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM) award for\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Welcome to F.L.<\/i>\u00a0(Bienvenue\u00a0<\/i>\u00e0<\/i>\u00a0F.L.<\/i><\/strong>)<\/strong> She also won big at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival with her first professional short film:\u00a0<\/span>The Cut<\/i>\u00a0(La coupe<\/i><\/strong>)<\/strong> took home the Short Film Jury Prize for International Fiction.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSundance was special,\u201d she recalls. \u201cAt that time, the prize gave us confidence. It helped us move forward and believe in ourselves. Because at the beginning of a filmmaking career, you need to have faith. You\u2019re taking a leap into the void.\u201d <\/span>The Cut (La coupe)\u00a0<\/i><\/strong>was also the first professional short by her long-time producers, Colonelle films<\/a>, who she still works with today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This dedication and passion led her in the right direction. Even before she studied film and started making movies, her artistic parents encouraged her to be creative and curious. So,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0no surprise that working with younger actors comes naturally to Dulude-De\u00a0Celles, who is herself a mother. \u201cI had the chance to work with child actors a lot, I\u2019m more used to that than working with adults!\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina Roza<\/i><\/strong> features two young Bulgarian twins, from Montreal, in their first acting role. \u201cThey are really stunning in the film,\u201d she says. This sense of innocence and discovery ignites the film\u2019s cast, with many actors in their first big parts. \u201cEvery character has a lot in common with the actors, in their story, which brings out something special in their performances, because they are also in some way, speaking about their experience,\u201d she says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While certainly, it\u2019s special to return to the festival that\u00a0honoured\u00a0her first feature to premiere her next one, for Dulude-De\u00a0Celles, the biggest reward is the chance to work with \u201cfantastic collaborators\u201d and nurture the international creative relationships that brought this story to life. \u201cI have an artistic family in Quebec, now I can say I have an artistic family in Belgium, Bulgaria, and Italy \u2013 so I\u2019m lucky.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
